Should You Recruit Part-Time Agents?
Every agency boss has had the thought: “More agents = more growth. Maybe even part-timers.”
But in Malaysia, recruitment isn’t free. Each Registered Estate Agent (REA) pays an annual license fee and has only 50 precious REN slots. That makes every single slot a scarce, costly resource.
So the real question isn’t “Should I recruit part-timers?” It’s: “Is this person worth burning one of my 50 slots?”
The Only Two Types Worth Your Slot
At most, there are only two categories of part-timers worth considering:
- Agents With Real, Active Networks
Someone with genuine access to buyers, sellers, or developers can open doors no one else can. If they’re willing to activate those connections, even one major deal can justify their slot for the year.
- Hardworking Career Builders
Ambitious individuals who are committed to making real estate their long-term career. They may start part-time, but their grind compounds. These are your future leaders and core producers.
The Trap: The Dead Weight Part-Timer
This is where most agencies bleed money and waste their most limited resource:
- The Dormant Network: Just because someone has connections doesn’t mean they’ll use them for you. Many will guard their network, dabble in a deal or two, and then disappear—leaving you with a wasted quota.
- No Network, No Hustle: The majority of recruits fall here. They lack a real circle of influence and the commitment to prospect. They are seat-warmers who produce nothing while blocking a slot from someone with potential.
If you don’t track performance ruthlessly, you’re not running an agency—you’re running a charity.
Know When to Cut. Your Business Depends On It.
Recruiting is only half the job. The other half is pruning.
You must be willing to terminate unproductive RENs to protect your quota. Cut them if:
- Their promised network isn’t producing.
- They aren’t committing after a fair trial period.
- They are blocking a slot from a hungrier, more potential candidate.
Protect your 50 slots like your life depends on it. Because financially, it does.
The Bottom Line
Don’t just fill slots. Curate assets.
Every part-time recruit should be a strategic bet on either immediate network access or long-term growth. Anything else is a luxury you can’t afford.
Your quota is your most valuable currency. Spend it wisely.
